The MERV Rating

What is a MERV Rating?

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, a standard created by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This rating shows how effectively an air filter captures airborne particles between 0.3 and 10 microns in size — including dust, pollen, mold spores, smoke, and bacteria.

The higher the MERV rating, the more particles the filter can trap without reducing airflow. This makes MERV ratings the easiest way to compare the performance of different air filter brands and types.

MERV Rating Guide

  • MERV 6–8: Basic protection. Captures lint, dust, and larger particles. Good for households without pets or allergy concerns.

  • MERV 9–11: Advanced protection. Traps pet dander, mold spores, and fine dust. Recommended for homes with pets, children, or mild allergies.

  • MERV 12–13: Maximum residential protection. Removes bacteria, smoke, and fine particulates. Ideal for asthma, severe allergies, or high-pollution environments.

Which MERV Filter Do You Need?

  • Allergy or asthma issues? Choose MERV 11–13.

  • Living in a harsh environment (coastal, wildfire-prone, or high pollen/dust)? Choose MERV 11–13.

  • No major concerns, just want clean air? A MERV 6–8 filter will handle everyday dust and debris.
